Introduction
Devrek is a district of Zonguldak province, located in the north of Türkiye in the Western Black Sea section of the Black Sea Region. It covers 953 km². The average elevation of the district centre above sea level is 91 metres.
History
Because of its location far from the major centres of civilisation, and its natural features that cut off access between the sea and the interior, the Devrek region remained far from major events. Surface surveys carried out in the region by Prof. Dr Güngör Karauğuz revealed traces of civilisation in the Devrek region dating back some 5,000 years. It is generally accepted that most of the settlements in the area were established in the Phrygian period and that Phrygian rule extended over this region. In the Phrygian and Lydian periods, during the second wave of colonisation known in history (750–550 BC), the Greek Megarians settled in Ereğli, the Teians in Filyos and the Milesians in Amasra. The Kingdom of Bithynia was incorporated into Roman territory in 74 BC. Devrek was conquered for the second time after the Battle of Myriokephalon (1176), and it was Turkified in 1196.
History and Culture
The Devrek region remained within the borders of the Kingdom of Bithynia, which was founded west of the Bartın River. The Devrek region remained under Byzantine territory after 395. It is generally accepted that most settlements were founded in the Phrygian period. Surface surveys have revealed traces of civilisation in the Devrek region dating back some 5,000 years.
