Çınarcık is a district of Yalova Province, with an area of 178 km², an elevation of 32 metres and a population of 40,174. It is the largest district of Yalova Province outside the city centre. The average elevation of the district centre above sea level is 15 metres. In winter the population is around 13,000, while in summer this figure can sometimes exceed 300,000.
The land on which the district stands was home to settlements founded 3,000–4,000 years before the Common Era. After the Phrygians, the region remained under pre-Classical, Classical and Hellenistic states, and in 74 BC it passed to the Roman state. After long centuries of Byzantine rule, Çınarcık was incorporated into Ottoman territory in 1307 by Osman Bey. During the War of Independence it was occupied 3 times and was fully liberated from enemy occupation on 19 July 1921. In the Greek period its name was KİO, meaning “city of clean air”.
The Çerikli Clock Tower, erected in the town square in 2005, has become the emblem of the district. The base of the clock tower also serves as a fountain.
The name Hasan Baba lives on in the memory of Çınarcık’s people as a heroic martyr. During the War of Independence Çınarcık was occupied 3 times and was last liberated on 19 July 1921. Since 1994, the Altın Çınar (Golden Plane Tree) Festival has been held in August. Every year in the first week of August, the Şenköy Cornelian Cherry Festival is held in Şenköy. The name Çınarcık is said to derive from the great plane trees in the district.
