Batman is a young province in Southeastern Anatolia, set between the Tigris River and the Batman River. The present city grew out of the small village of İluh. After oil was first discovered in Türkiye in 1940 at nearby Raman Mountain, the village grew rapidly. It became a district under the name Batman in 1957, and on 16 May 1990 it became the 72nd province of Türkiye.
The oldest and most famous settlement in the province is Hasankeyf. Finds from the Hasankeyf mound date back 12,000 years.
Summers in Batman are very hot and almost rainless, while winters are cold and wet.
The most important piece in the museum is the gaming stones found during the excavation at Başur Höyük.
