Before you set off
- HGS toll tag
Motorway and bridge toll booths do not take cash. Make sure your car has an HGS tag; with a rental car, ask how tolls are paid when you collect it.
- Extra time for districts and plateaus
Distances are between provincial centres. If you plan detours to districts, mountain plateaus or ancient cities, add a few hours to your day plan.
- Breaks and driving time
On long drives, take a break roughly every two hours. On mountain and winding roads the real driving time can be longer than the estimate here.
- Winter roads
In winter there is snow and ice on the high passes of Eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea region. Check road conditions before you set off and carry snow chains.
- Accommodation
In the summer holidays, on religious holidays and long weekends, coastal and tourist areas book up early; reserve your accommodation in advance.
- Offline maps
There may be no mobile signal on plateau and mountain roads. Download maps of the regions on your route for offline use before you set off.
