Tefenni is a district of Burdur province. It covers an area of 582 km² and has an elevation of 1,163 metres.
The Tefenni district was founded between 800 and 500 BC as the Byzantine-era village of Istefani, and remained under Byzantine rule until the 13th century. After the earthquake of 1882, the old settlement was abandoned and moved to its present location; in 1886 the name Istefani was changed to Tefenni.
Tefenni lies at a transition point between the Mediterranean Region and the Central Anatolia Region, so it is influenced by the climate of both regions. The highest mountain in the district is Eşeler Mountain. Although there are no continuously flowing rivers or streams, there are streams that dry up in the summer months.
The district’s economy is based on agriculture and livestock farming. Of its 200,000 decares of farmland, 120,000 decares are irrigated and 80,000 decares are dry-farmed. Field crops in the district include wheat, barley, maize and oats; industrial crops include sugar beet, anise, coriander and poppy. Fruit growing is well developed, and the most important fruit is apple; cold storage warehouses help make use of the fruit. Livestock farming produces meat, milk, cheese and honey, and daily milk production approaches 28 tonnes.
Tefenni district was founded between 800 and 500 BC as the Byzantine-era village of Istefani. From the 13th century onwards it passed into the hands of the Turkmens, the Seljuk dynasty and the Ottomans. In 1882 an earthquake in the area led to the abandonment of the old settlement and its founding at its present site. In 1886 the name Istefani was changed and the place became a district (kaza) under the name Tefenni. Tefenni has the distinction of hosting three Turkish civilisations.
