Çelebi is a district of Kırıkkale province in the Central Anatolia Region. It is surrounded by Kapulukaya Dam, Kesikköprü Dam, Karakeçili, Keskin, Kaman and Balâ. The district covers 223 km² and has a population of 2,587.
Çelebi village, the centre of the Çelebi subdistrict of Keskin district in Ankara province, gained municipal status on 17 May 1967 and became a town. The Çelebi subdistrict separated from Keskin district and gained district status in 1990. Çelebi was badly damaged in the 1938 earthquake, and its development was halted for a time.
Çelebi lies to the south of Kırıkkale: Keskin is to the east, Kaman to the south and west, and Bala to the west. It is 57 km from Kırıkkale city centre and lies in a mountainous part. The altitude of Çelebi district centre above sea level averages 1,236 metres. The vegetation of the district is entirely steppe, and it has almost no forest cover.
The district’s economy is based on agriculture and livestock farming. Although the district has about 25,500 decares of irrigable land, yields are very low because adequate irrigation cannot be carried out due to insufficient technology. Stable-based livestock farming is more developed in the centre than pasture-based livestock farming.
Çelebi was badly damaged in the 1938 earthquake, and its development was halted for a time. Çelebi officially became a district by a Law published in the Official Gazette on 20 May 1990. Remains found in Çelebi indicate that there was a madrasa there in the Ottoman period.
