Altunhisar is a district of Niğde province. The district covers an area of 552 km², and the average altitude of the district centre above sea level is 1,236 metres. Located west of Niğde, within the borders of the Cappadocia region, the district has significant farmland.
The towns and villages were generally founded by Turkmen yörüks of the Kayı tribe. Its former name was Ortaköy; around 1500–1300 BC the area is recorded as Anduğı, and in the Ottoman period it took the name Ortaköy. Altunhisar also appears in Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname.
In recent years, with the construction of TOKİ housing, an intercity bus terminal and the Disabled Education Centre, the district has seen major development. The road linking Niğde with Aksaray and Ankara passes through Altunhisar; this road was converted to a dual carriageway in 2011. In 2005–2006, the Ministry of Forestry planted a 500-hectare forest along the highland pasture road of Altunhisar.
In 2010 an asphalt road was built between Çiftlik district and Altunhisar, linking the two districts. Turning right about 1 km after the Altunhisar exit on this road leads to the Bayatönü Rock Dwellings, a settlement created by carving out rocks and dating back to before the common era. Although neglected, its 3-storey cave houses are worth seeing.
The towns attached to the district are Çömlekçi, Karakapı, Keçikalesi, Ulukışla, Yakacık and Yeşilyurt; the villages are Akçaören and Uluören.
Altunhisar was founded south-west of Niğde, at the foot of Hasan Mountain. The district came under Seljuk rule after the Battle of Malazgirt. The name of the district was changed to Altınhisar in 1956.
