Marmaraereğlisi is a district of Tekirdağ province, 35 km from Silivri, 90 km from Istanbul and 38 km from Tekirdağ.
Marmaraereğlisi was originally called Perinthos, then renamed Heraklia, and later Ereğli by the Ottoman Turks.
According to the Apostolic Age tradition, Heraclea was a Christian bishopric. As capital of the Roman province of Europa, it became the metropolitan archbishopric of all bishoprics, including Byzantium. It was under Greek occupation from 20 October 1920, when the Greeks landed the Izmir division on the Ereğli shores, until 30 October 1922.
The district is a peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides and has a long coastline of 32 km. It has two important natural harbours and 3 piers. On the seafront are 3rd-century rock tombs, and an open-air museum is located among them.
The town was known as Ereğli in Ottoman times and took the name Marmara Ereğlisi in 1944. Marmaraereğlisi separated from Çorlu district, to which it had been attached as a bucak (subdistrict) until 1987, and became a district. The Greek occupation began on 20 October 1920 and lasted until 30 October 1922. The 3rd-century rock tombs lie on the seafront.
