History

Mazgirt is one of the oldest settlements because of its geographical location, and its historical roots go back to the Bronze Age. After the Battle of Otlukbeli in 1473, Ottoman rule was consolidated; with the Battle of Chaldiran in 1514, it was definitively incorporated into Ottoman territory.

Geography

The area around the dam lake consists of small hills and is arable land.

History and Culture

Mazgirt was attached to the Province of Tunceli, established in 1935. Mazgirt came under Ottoman rule after the defeat of the Aq Qoyunlu in 1473.

Highlights

Mazgirt Castle, Bağın Castle and Kaleköy Castle date from the Urartian period. In the centre of Mazgirt there is an octagonal 13th-century tomb, the Elti Hatun Tomb. Mazgirt was one of the four sanjaks attached to Çarsancak during the period of the Principality of Çemişgezek.
