Göle is a district of Ardahan Province and the seat of that district. The district covers 1,290 km².
Etymology
It is suggested that this region, where the plain surrounded by mountains fills with water as the snow melts in spring, turning into a lake, and where the Kura River rises, may have been named ‘Göl’ (lake).
History
Once called Kola, Göle lay within the borders of the Kingdom of Iberia in the 4th century BC and belonged to the Principality of Tzunda. In the 9th century, Ashot I of Iberia drove the Arabs out of the region, and Göle joined the Kingdom of Georgia. At the end of the 16th century, the Ottomans took Göle. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, Göle was ceded to Russia, and it joined Türkiye in 1921.
History and Culture
The old name of the town at the centre of Göle district was Merdenik. While Göle was under Georgian rule, it was invaded by the Umayyads. After the war, Muslim Georgians who had emigrated were replaced by Greeks and Armenians.
