Ancient Period and History

The earliest settlements in Başiskele began to be founded in 712 BC, when Megarians migrated to the area. The first port on the gulf was established in this area, and it gave Başiskele its name. Astakos became a city-state, grew economically strong and minted its own coins.

Ottoman and Republican Periods

During the reign of Orhan Bey, the area was conquered by the Ottomans in 1337, along with the Bursa region, through the efforts of Akçakoca Bey and Süleyman Paşa. The present name of Bahçecik is the full Turkish equivalent of Bardızağ, an Armenian name. After 1921, the Armenians and Greeks in the area migrated away from it.
