Derince is a district of Kocaeli province and is a new settlement that emerged in the Republican period. It is 90 kilometres from Istanbul; the district covers an area of 198 km² and has an average elevation of 14 metres above sea level.
In 1890, a place with the deepest shore in İzmit Gulf was sought for the construction of a port, and the port was built at the spot identified by officials as the deepest. Derince takes its name from the depth of this shore. The port, which became operational in 1904, led workers there to start building homes. From 1887 onwards, Derince received migrants from the Balkans, the Caucasus and Crimea and began to develop. In 1952 it became an independent muhtarlık (village council), and Ahmet Usta was Derince’s first muhtar. On 27 May 1960 it was divided into four neighbourhoods. On 7 March 1992 it gained municipal status by merging six neighbourhoods.
Çenesuyu is a healing water source in the area and has contributed to Derince’s reputation.
