The district was formerly known as Yarımca and is surrounded by the districts of Gebze, Dilovası, Şile and Derince. Major industrial establishments such as TÜPRAŞ, PETKİM and İGSAŞ are located in the district.

History

On 26 September 1934 Yarımca was attached to the central district of İzmit from Gebze, to which it had been a village. It gained the status of a town (belde) on 3 May 1964, and in 1987 it became a district. Hereke Castle was built in the 7th century. In 1898, during the visit of Kaiser II. Wilhelm, Emperor of Germany, to the Ottoman Empire, the Kaiser II. Wilhelm Pavilion was commissioned. The district was affected by the 17 August Earthquake.

Geography

The district has a transitional climate influenced by the Mediterranean climate zone. The northern part of the district has elevation due to the Çenedağ, and this elevation becomes steeper to the west, forming the Hereke ridges. The district has flat areas and lies on the coast of the Gulf of İzmit.

History and Culture

The name Yarımca was given because of the construction work that was begun and left half-finished. Hereke is famous for carpet weaving, and a carpet-weaving factory is located there. TÜPRAŞ, PETKİM and İGSAŞ are the main large industrial establishments of the district.
