History

In antiquity the Kazova area lay on the King’s Road and was known as Dazimonitis. The region came under Seljuk rule in 1073, changed hands among various beyliks, and came under Ottoman rule in 1399. Pazar became a district on 4 July 1987.

Geography

To the south of the district lies a range of mountains running east–west, while the Yeşilırmak river and the Kazova plain lie to the north. A large part of the district’s land is irrigated by the Yeşilırmak.

Tourism

The district has around ten artificial mounds within its boundaries, of which Endiz Mound on the eastern side dates to the Hellenistic period. On the eastern exit of Pazar stands a caravanserai built in 1238 by Mahperi Hatun. The Halil Bey Mosque in the district centre was built in 1334 during the reign of the Ilkhanid ruler Abu Said Bahadur Khan. Ballıca Cave, estimated to be about 3.4 million years old, holds a special place among its kind in the world for its size and geological features.
