The district lies on the border with Denizli province.
Ulubey shared the same periods as the history of Uşak: it was under Hittite, Phrygian, Lydian, Persian, Macedonian, Pergamene, Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk rule, as well as that of the Germiyanids. The district’s lands came firmly under Ottoman rule in 1429. The ancient city of Blaundos, in Sülümenli village, was founded by the Macedonians in 334 BC. In the Ottoman tax registers of the 16th century, the settlement was recorded as “Ulu-Göbek” and “Göbek”. On 15 July 1953, with Law No. 6129 making Uşak a province, Ulubey was attached to Uşak as a district.
Nearly half of Ulubey’s land is farmland, and there are 27 villages in the district. Within the district’s borders there are 24,842 hectares of forest, where pine, wild pear and valonia oak trees grow. Ulubey Canyon stretches for about 75 km along the Dokuzsele Stream within the district.
The climate is generally mild, with a transitional climate between Central Anatolia and the Aegean prevailing. The annual average temperature is 13.7 °C.
As the district’s economy depends largely on agriculture, most people work as farmers. Wheat, barley, chickpeas and tobacco are the most widely grown crops; poppies, grapes, pears, apples and sesame are also produced.
Ulubey Canyon, the ancient city of Blaundos at Sülümenli, the canyons and the burial mounds are the district’s major historical attractions. Ulubey Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world, is located in the district. In 2015 a 135 m² glass terrace was built to form a viewing area over the canyon. Ulubey Canyon was declared a nature park in 2013.
