The district’s altitude is 903 metres.

The town of Besni, the subject of historical sources, was founded around Besni Castle at the archaeological site known as Old Besni, 5 km south of the district’s present location. Besni remained around the castle until the late 1950s. Because of landslides and flooding, the town was moved to its present location between 1950 and 1965.

Besni must have come under the Assyrian military sphere of influence from the 9th century BC. The importance Besni gained in the Commagene period is understood from monumental works in the surroundings, such as Sofraz and Sesünk.

History and Culture

Because of landslides and flooding, the settlement was moved to its present location between 1950 and 1965. Besni became a district when, by a law of 22 June 1954, it was attached to the newly founded Adıyaman province. The Sofraz tumuli are thought to have been built in the 1st–2nd centuries AD, in the Roman period.

Key Facts

With a history going back to 5000 BC, Besni is one of the old settlement centres of Southeastern Anatolia. It was the first town to receive a commendation from Yıldırım Beyazıt for its heroism, which became legendary, against the Mongol and Timurid invasions.
