Samsat is a district of Adıyaman province and its ancient name is Samosata. The district covers 319 km², lies at an altitude of 592 m and has a population of 6,834, making it the least populous district in Adıyaman province.

History

Samsat has a very long history. The city takes its name from King Samos, grandfather of Commagene king Antiochus I Epiphanes. Made a Roman province in AD 72, Samsat became a centre of learning, and the famous scholar Lucian was born there during this period. It was the seat of a sanjak in the Ottoman period. In the Republican period it declined to a subdistrict centre, but in 1960 it was made a district centre again.

Geography and Current Situation

Because it would be submerged beneath the waters of Atatürk Dam Lake, the old settlement was evacuated in 1988 and moved to a new site. The district now appears as a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Atatürk Dam Lake.

History and Culture

Samsat was the centre of the Kingdom of Commagene in 69 BC. It became a Roman province in AD 72 and a centre of learning. Samsat became a district centre in 1960 and was attached to Adıyaman province. The district centre, which lay under the waters of Atatürk Dam, was evacuated in 1988 and moved to its present site. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the newly built Samsat on 2 March 2017.
