Torul is a district of Gümüşhane in the Eastern Black Sea section of the Black Sea Region.
The earliest record of Torul’s history is Xenophon’s Anabasis, written in the 400s BC, which places a tribe called Dril among the Colchian peoples in the region. In 1404, a papal envoy who visited the region reported that Torul was under the control of the Kabasitas family, and that the Çepni had built castles and stationed themselves on the borders. After the Ottoman campaign to bring the Zigana Valley under control in 1481, the castle and town passed to Ottoman rule. In the 17th century it was united with Gümüşhane to form a kaza, and later gained an independent administrative structure as a separate kaza. In 1876, a municipal organisation was set up in Torul, and its first mayor was Hüseyin Bey.
The earliest document in which Torul and its surroundings are mentioned is Xenophon’s Anabasis, written in the 400s BC. According to Ottoman chronicles, Torul was conquered in 1479. The local folk dances of the area are mainly Horon and Bar, accompanied by kemençe and davul-zurna.
