History
Çukurca is known to be one of the first settlements of the Urartian Civilization. The Abbasids governed this settlement through a religious, political and military chieftaincy called the ‘mir’. During the Seljuk period the district was subject to the Principality of İmadiye, and during the Ottoman period to the Principality of Hakkari. It was destroyed by the Russians and Nestorians during the First World War, and in 1926 it was brought within Turkish territory by the Treaty of Ankara. It was made a district in 1953 by Law No. 6068.
Geography
Because of its low altitude, Çukurca has relatively mild winters and a very thin snow cover. Spring comes early in the district, where heat-loving fruits such as figs and pomegranates are grown, and summers are dry and hot.
