Pre-Historic Periods

Excavations in Ortaköy and its surroundings concerning the pre-historic period have revealed traces of a history extending to the Early Bronze Age. Settlements with cultural layers, such as Kalehöyük, Koçhasan Mound and Muratlı Mound, show the rich archaeological heritage of the region.

Seljuk and Ottoman Periods

After the conquests of Danişmend Gazi and the Anatolian Seljuk State, Ortaköy was turned into a Turkish homeland. In 1470, when İshak Pasha brought Şereflikoçhisar and the area around Aksaray under Ottoman rule, Ortaköy also came under Ottoman administration.

History and Culture

Ortaköy became a district of Niğde Province in 1957, and a municipality was established the same year. To date, no comprehensive historical and archaeological research has been carried out in Ortaköy and its surroundings. The people of Ortaköy made every sacrifice for the liberation of the homeland during the War of Independence.

Notable Information

In 1470, Aksaray and its surroundings were incorporated into Ottoman territory under the command of İshak Pasha. The tomb of Yunus Emre is on Ziyaret Hill, near the town of Sarıkaraman in Ortaköy.
