Location and Administrative History

Dörtdivan is a district of Bolu province. In 1953 the Dörtdivan subdistrict was established under the district of Gerede, and in 1990 it separated from Gerede to become a district.

History and Mythology

Part of the Kayı branch of the Oghuz Turks, who came to Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert, settled in Dörtdivan and its surroundings between 1074 and 1076. It is estimated that Dörtdivan was founded as a settlement in 1197, in the time of Alaaddin Keykubat I. Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname states that the place was called “DİVAN” because Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat I, while still Bey of Bolu, had the divan drum played in the mountains. After the Ottoman army was defeated at the Battle of Ankara, it was pursued by Timur’s army during its retreat; Ottoman soldiers who reached Gerede and Dörtdivan were adopted and protected by the local population.
