Geography

Kızılırmak district lies in the Middle Kızılırmak section of Central Anatolia. The study area is bordered to the north and north-west by Çankırı city centre, to the west and south by the district of Sulakyurt (Kırıkkale), to the south-east by the district of Sungurlu (Çorum), and to the east by the district of Bayat (Çorum). The average elevation of Kızılırmak district above sea level is 555 metres. The study area is bounded to the north by Mount Kursiyer (1,100 m) and to the west by Bozkır Mountain (1,050 m).

Climate and Vegetation

The average temperature in June is 15.4 °C, while the average in January drops to −2.7 °C. The study area is very poor in vegetation; owing to the continental climate, steppe grassland is the most important plant community in the study area.

Economy

Settlements in the study area developed because of the availability of water and the presence of fertile farmland. Over the last 15 years, since irrigated farming began in the district, the Kızılırmak river has become a lifeline for the district. With three rice mills set up in the last 5 years, industry appears to be beginning to stir in the district.

History and Culture

Kızılırmak was a village called Hüseyinli, attached to Kalecik, in the 1930s, before it later became a district. One of the district’s former names was İnallı Ballı. The district was incorporated into Turkish territory during the time of Çankırı’s conqueror Karatekin.
