General Information
Yığılca is a district of Düzce province. It covers 636 km² and has the smallest population of any district in the province. It is 33 km from Düzce city centre, 100 km from the nearby city of Adapazarı, 276 km from Ankara and 234 km from Istanbul.
History
Yığılca, a subdistrict (nahiye) attached to Düzce county, was made a district by Law No. 6324 in 1954.
Geography
Yığılca district lies at an elevation of 331 m above sea level. Set on rugged, steep terrain, the district has very little farmland and is mostly wooded. Its climate is mild, resembling the Western Black Sea climate. Yığılca lies in the upper basin of the Melendere Stream, which flows into the Hasanlar Dam Lake that irrigates the Düzce Plain. Except for Yaylatepe village, the highest, the other villages are lined up in a row on the slopes to the south and north of the basin.
Geographical Features
The main hills surrounding the basin are: Yaylacık Hill, Köybaşı Hill (678 m), Kızıltepe (1,486 m), Sarıkaya Hill (1,036 m), Bacaklıyayla (1,137 m), Aktaş Ridges (1,271 m), Kiriş Hill (1,398 m), Geymen Hill (1,438 m), İğnekiriş Hill (987 m) and Kırıksapağı Hill (919 m). The district is very rich in watercourses. The Melen River, flowing from east to west, is fed by rich streams from the north and south.
Economy
Because the district is sloping and mostly forested, its farmland is narrow and unproductive. Yığılca’s average annual production is 7,500 tonnes of wheat, 600 tonnes of barley, 12,000 tonnes of maize, 60 tonnes of rye and 8,000 tonnes of hazelnuts.
History and Culture
Yığılca became a district through Law No. 6324 in 1954. Sarıkaya Cave is registered as a first-degree protected site; its total length is 717 metres.
