Emet contributes to thermal tourism with its thermal springs and was declared a ‘Thermal Tourism Zone’ by the Council of Ministers on 17 October 1993. Türkiye holds around 70% of the world’s boron reserves, and more than 50% of this mineral is found in Emet; with newly discovered reserves, this share is steadily increasing. One of the world’s few boric acid plants, of which there are fewer than ten, also operates in this district.
Eğrigöz Castle, a fortress built in the Roman period and also used in the Byzantine period, is known as the place where Kazıklı Voyvoda was held in exile. In 1378 it was given as the dowry of Devlet Hatun, daughter of Germiyanoğlu Süleyman Şah, to Yıldırım Beyazıt Khan, and it retained its importance in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
The history of Emet has continued since the Chalcolithic period. Zeytino Han was one of the places given on loan to the Zeytinoğulları during the War of Independence. After the occupation of İzmir, the first organisations in Emet were set up. Emet was occupied by Greek forces on 14 August 1921.
