Arapgir is a district of Malatya province, located in the western part of the Upper Euphrates section of the Eastern Anatolia Region. The district covers 987 km², lies at an altitude of 1,169 m and has a population of 9,917. It lies on the western bank of the Euphrates valley, 114 km from Malatya.
Arapgir’s former name was Daskuza. It is one of the oldest settlements around Daskuza and may be considered as old as Malatya itself. Arapgir was conquered by the Arab commander Hatem Tai in 577. Until 1928 it was attached to Elazığ; in the state yearbook of 1927–1928 it was listed as a district of Malatya.
The Grand Mosque of Arapgir is believed to have been built in 1334 under the Ilkhanids. The walls of the Gümrükçü Osman Paşa Mosque bear three inscriptions dated AH 1209, 1228 and 1229.
