Hekimhan is a district of Malatya province, and its name means “the physician’s inn”. The district covers an area of 1,514 km² and has an average elevation of 1,125 metres above sea level. The highest point in the district is Zurbahan Mountain, to the north.

History

Hekimhan was identified as a suitable place for accommodation and, after being surveyed and revised, was founded as a settled town. Taşhan caravanserai is a building that continues the traditions of Seljuk sultanic caravanserais, consisting of a square courtyard with a colonnaded front and a hall following it. The second section of Taşhan around the courtyard was commissioned by Köprülü Mehmet Paşa during the reign of Mehmed IV.

Architecture and Culture

Among the district’s historic buildings are Taşhan caravanserai (from the Seljuk period), a hammam and a mosque (from the Ottoman period).

History and Culture

Taşhan is cited as the building that gave the district its name. The district was founded for military purposes by Köprülü Mehmet Paşa between 1656 and 1661. Hekimhan gained the status of a sub-district effective from 1 July 1921. Taşhan was restored between 2006 and 2009 by the Regional Directorate of Foundations.
