Yüreğir is one of the central districts of Adana Metropolitan Municipality. Covering 835 km², it has an altitude of 35 metres. Established in 1986, the district takes its name from the Üçok clan of the Turkic Oghuz tribe, which settled here between 1250 and 1352.

Because it lies on historic routes of passage, the district has been regarded as an important junction. In the early and medieval periods Yüreğir was an important settlement, and its ancient monuments include a bridge, a mound, floor mosaics, aqueducts, a bath and a caravanserai.

History and Culture

Yüreğir became a municipality on 5 June 1986. It takes its name from the Üçok clan, which settled here between 1250 and 1352. Yüreğir and its surroundings contain ancient monuments such as bridges, mounds, mosaics, aqueducts, baths and caravanserais. Misis is said to have been founded by Mopsos, one of the heroes of Troy. Excavations at Misis Mound have documented that the settlement history goes back to the 7000s BC. The nine-arched stone bridge still stands intact and is in use today.
