Keşan is a district of Edirne. It is the 6th largest settlement area in Turkish Thrace, after Çorlu, Tekirdağ, Çerkezköy, Edirne and Lüleburgaz. The district has a history going back to the Luwians and Thracians, from the 30th century BC.
In antiquity the district was called ‘Zerlanis’; the Luwians, who began to arrive in the region from the 30th century BC, are said to have given it this name. Keşan became a district attached to the Gelibolu sanjak in 1877. It was occupied by Russian, Bulgarian and Greek forces, and in 1922 it came under the Grand National Assembly government (TBMM).
The Saros coast and the resorts there, such as Erikli, Yayla and Mecidiye, are centres of sea, forest and picnic-style summer tourism. The Saros Gulf has 144 species of fish and 170 species of underwater life, and it is one of the world’s two self-cleansing gulfs.
Keşan was attached to Edirne in 1926, when Gelibolu province was abolished. The name Keşan is said to derive from an inn famous for its many beams (kiriş). After the conquest by Salakoğlu, migrants from Anatolia were settled in Keşan.
