History
The name of the district is said to come from Silandos, the name used in the Lydian period, or from the phrase “sel endi” (“the flood has receded”), which came into use after floods in the Selendi Stream. Ters Tepe Mound shows that the district has been a settlement for 7,500 years, and people are understood to have lived there from the Chalcolithic period to the present day.
Geography and Economy
The Selendi Stream, one of the major tributaries of the Gediz River, flows through the district. Its main livelihood is tobacco growing, livestock farming and agriculture, and cherry growing has also increased in recent years. Selendi’s tarhana, höşmerim, keşkek and yufka are famous, and the small-leaved American-type tobacco grown in the district is very valuable.
History and Culture
Selendi was established in 1954 from villages taken from Kula and Demirci. Fierce fighting took place in Aşağı Güllüce and Kınık during the War of Independence.
