Pazar is a district of Rize province on the Black Sea coast, and the district centre is its administrative seat.
History
As a settlement, Athens was founded by Pompey as Athenae in 64 BC. The Lazistan area, where the Athens region lies, was within the borders of the Kingdom of Colchis in Antiquity. After the Ottomans eliminated the Empire of Trebizond in 1461, they fully took over this region in 1547. By a decree dated 17 October 1928 and numbered 4948, the district of Atine, attached to Rize Province, was renamed Pazar.
Geography
Pazar lies 37 km east of Rize city. It is a Black Sea coastal strip, running parallel to the coast with high inland mountains. The highest mountain in the district is Kaçkar Mountain, at 3,737 metres. Plateau farming is an economic activity in the district that has been sustained for centuries as a result of natural conditions.
Economy
Tea accounts for the largest share of the district’s economy. Tea was planted in the district in 1944, and there are now three factories in Pazar to process the crop. 65% of Pazar’s arable land is used to grow tea.
History and Culture
Pazar’s former name was Athena, and it is said to have been founded by Pompey in 64 BC. The name of the district was changed to Pazar in 1928, in the Republican period. The date of construction of Kız Castle is not known for certain, although it is thought to have been in use in the 13th or 14th century. The district was occupied by Russia in 1916, and was liberated from the Russian occupation in 1918.
