Ceylanpınar is a district of Şanlıurfa province. Its history goes back some 5,000 years; in the Assyrian period it was known as Vaşşugar and was the capital of the Mitanni State.
The district’s Kurdish name is Serê Kaniyê and its Arabic name is Ras el-Ayn. Both names mean “spring head” in Turkish. The district takes its name from the gazelles (ceylan) and from the Habur River, which passes through the area where the gazelles live.
During the Ottoman Empire, Ceylanpınar belonged to the Resulayn district, which is now in Syria. On 16 April 1946, the Resulayn bucak was renamed Ceylanpınar. On 25 May 1959, it gained municipal status and became a town (belde). With Law No. 2585 of 14 January 1982, it gained district status.

There are around 1,500 gazelles within TİGEM. On 30 July 2000, a temperature of 48.2 °C recorded in the district was among the highest temperatures ever recorded in Türkiye.
Ceylanpınar’s history goes back to around 5000 BC, and the settlement was founded in Upper Mesopotamia. According to the municipality’s website, traces of the Assyrians, Hittites, Abbasids, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans can be found in the district. In the Assyrian period, the place known as Vaşşugar was the capital of the Mitanni State. The Resulayn bucak was renamed Ceylanpınar on 16 April 1946. It gained district status on 14.01.1982. Gazelles are found in Türkiye only in Ceylanpınar district of Şanlıurfa and its surroundings. The district takes its name from the gazelles, which also feature in folk songs. Gazelles were placed under protection by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 1977.
