Boğazlıyan is a district of Yozgat province. The district is home to Türkiye’s 25th sugar factory. It is located in the south of the province.
The district covers 1,515 km² and its altitude above sea level is 1,070 metres. It is set on a plain and is connected by a 23 km road to the Yenifakılı station on the Kayseri–Ankara railway.
The district was founded by the Boğazlıyanoğulları tribe (oymak) among the Dulkadirli Turkmens, and takes its name from them. After the 1402 Battle of Ankara, the lands that had been emptied were settled by Bozoks.
Boğazlıyan completed its emergence above sea level, together with the Central Anatolia Region, in the late Eocene–Oligocene. Much of the district was affected by the Erciyes volcanoes, and high plateaus and thick tuff cover wide areas.
The district’s land has large flat and undulating areas, so it has great farming potential. The Boğazlıyan plain is very fertile, and sugar beet, wheat and barley are widely grown. The district lies at an important crossing point, north of Kayseri and south of Yozgat.
The Cavlak hot spring has water that is rare in Türkiye.
The district takes its name from the Boğazlıyanoğulları tribe that founded it. During the War of Independence, the district’s people sided with the Grand National Assembly.
