Settlement in Kiraz and its surroundings began with the Hittites in the 2000s BC. The area was settled by Ionians in the 1300s BC and, after the 8th century BC, took the name Klaos. In the Ottoman period the area was known as Keles. On 1 January 1948 it separated from Ödemiş and became a district under the name Kiraz.
Kiraz and its plain villages, famed for their vineyards and orchards, are important centres of viticulture and farming. The main crops grown in the area are potatoes, tobacco, cotton, olives, chestnuts, walnuts, figs and grapes.
Kiraz was founded in 1948, when the settlement known as Keles became a district during the Republic of Türkiye. The ancient city of Koloe was located not where Kiraz stands today, but in Hisar village, 2 km north-west of it. Hisar Castle dates to the Roman-Byzantine period and was repaired during the Aydınoğlu Principality and the Ottoman period. Throughout the centuries the district has been one of the most important agricultural production centres in the Aegean Region. Kiraz and the plain villages are described as important centres of viticulture and agriculture.
