Seferihisar is a district of Izmir province in Türkiye, with an area of 375 km² and an elevation of 33 metres. Urla lies to the north, Güzelbahçe and Karabağlar to the north-east, the Menderes districts to the east, and the Aegean Sea to the south and west. Seferihisar became a district in 1884.

History

It can therefore be said that the region has been settled for 3,000 years. The origin of the district’s name is thought to go back to the Roman general Tysaferin. 11 April 1934 is an important turning point for Seferihisar.

Geography

The district centre is 45 km from the provincial centre. The district centre’s average elevation above sea level is 27 metres. Stream erosion has played a large role in shaping the landforms of the Seferihisar area, where deposition is significant. The sea has the greatest influence on the climate of the region. Seferihisar and its surroundings have very hot summers and mild winters.

History and Culture

The oldest settlement in the Seferihisar area is Teos, founded by Cretans around 1000 BC. On 11 April 1934, Atatürk visited the district centre and Sığacık. The Ionian Artists’ Union was founded at Teos at the end of the 3rd century BC.
