Tomarza is a district 55 km from Kayseri, lying to the southeast of Erciyes.
The region’s very long history as a settlement is evident from the animal sculptures, coins and reliefs from ancient times found in the district centre and various neighbourhoods. After Alparslan’s victory at Malazgirt in 1071, Uyghur Turks and Afshar Turks who came from Iran settled in the area. During the First World War, Tomarza hosted the Kuvâ-yi Milliye forces. It gained district status through a law published in the Official Gazette no. 8349 dated 3 March 1953.
Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold and snowy. The difference between day and night temperatures is very large, and outside June, July and August, night temperatures drop below 0 °C.
The Tomarza area is known to have been a very old settlement, as shown by artefacts from ancient times. The Pusatlı neighbourhood and its surroundings served as an ammunition depot for the Kuvâ-yi Milliye, and the neighbourhood takes its name from this. Some of the Turkish families brought to Türkiye under the 1924 population exchange agreements were settled in Tomarza. Tomarza gained district status through a law published in the Official Gazette no. 8349 dated 3 March 1953.
