Ulaş is a district of Sivas province. It has an area of 1,092 km², an altitude of 1,377 m and a population of 7,603. It lies south of Sivas Merkez district, on the Sivas–Malatya road, about 35 km from Sivas city centre. It gained district status in 1991.
Ulaş’s land is wide and flat; the average elevation of the district centre above sea level is 1,382 metres. The major mountain within its boundaries is Tecer Mountain, whose spring at the Beş Gözler site supplies the people’s drinking and farming water needs. Ulaş has 11 lakes. The salt lake in the district centre fills in winter and dries out in summer, taking on a white appearance. It is now fed by the Tecer stream, has been stocked with fish fry from the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), and has been turned into a picnic area for the public.
The people make their living from farming, livestock and, here and there, a little weaving. The district’s agricultural farm has become an important employment centre and a major producer of small livestock and cereals in particular. Sales are made to many parts of the world from the Kangal dog farm that has been established.
Ulaş has had municipality status since 2 June 1968. In the 2000 census its population was 15,283. Ulaş is the birthplace of a folk hero who bears the name Mihrali Bey.
