Milas is one of the 13 districts of Muğla. The district covers an area of 2,067 km², and the district centre lies at an average altitude of 60 m above sea level. Milas served as the capital of the ancient Carian civilisation and of the Menteşe Principality, and in many periods the town centre functioned as a fortified castle.

History

The district town has enjoyed a favourable position throughout history, thanks to the wide and fertile plain it governs and the rich marble deposits in the mountains behind it. The oldest monument in the town centre is the Temple of Augustus, located in the Hisarbaşı neighbourhood.

Architectural Heritage

Milas is known for having had no city walls throughout its history. Notable architectural structures in the town include the Milas Grand Mosque (built in 1378 during the Menteşe Principality), Çöllüoğlu Han and Firuzbey Mosque.

Surroundings

Beçin Castle, the administrative capital of the Menteşeoğulları Principality, lies 5 km from Milas. Gümüşkesen is a well-preserved tomb monument built in the 2nd century AD and considered a smaller model of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

History and Culture

Beçin came under Menteşeoğulları control at the end of the 13th century and for a time was the capital of the principality. The Milas Grand Mosque was built in 1378 during the Menteşe Principality period.
