Yatağan is one of the smallest districts of Muğla in terms of area and population. The district is a long way from the sea and the coastline. Its economy depends largely on lignite mines and the Yatağan Thermal Power Plant. As tourism has not developed, agriculture and livestock farming have grown. Olives and maize are mainly grown in the district. The ancient cities of Stratonikeia and Lagina are the district’s important tourist sites.

History and Culture

Stratonikeia was an important religious centre whose people visited the Temple of Hekate at Lagina every year during the Seleucid dynasty. After Stratonikeia was founded by the Seleucid Kingdom, Lagina became one of the most important rural cult centres of the period, and the Temple of Hekate, the most magnificent structure of its era, was built in the Roman period. Although Yatağan is one of the smallest districts of Muğla in terms of area and population, it is home to archaeologically important ancient settlements. The ancient cities of Stratonikeia and Lagina form the main source of Yatağan’s tourism potential.

Highlights

Yatağan was formerly known as Caria and later as Menteşe. The Stratonikeia Ancient City lies within the boundaries of Eskihisar village, which is attached to Yatağan district.
