Karapürçek is the oldest nahiye (subdistrict) of Sakarya Province. Its founding date is not known, but it is believed to have been one of the major settlements in the Byzantine period. The rule of the Bithynian Kingdom, which began in the 3rd century BC, lasted until Roman rule in the 1st century BC.
History and Etymology
According to legend, in Byzantine times three brothers named Karabıçaklı settled here and founded the villages of Küçücek to the east, Küçükkarapürçek to the north and Büyükkarapürçek to the south. In 1324 it was annexed to Ottoman lands by Konuralp and Akçakoca. During the earthquake of 1967, historic structures left from the Ottoman period were destroyed or damaged, and new buildings were constructed in 1967–1968.
Geography
Karapürçek lies in the south-east of Sakarya and has rugged terrain, while its southern part consists of plain. 65% of the district’s land is covered by forest; these forests contain hornbeam, oak, beech, Turkish pine and black pine trees.
History and Culture
Karapürçek is known as the oldest nahiye of Sakarya. In the 1967 earthquake, historic Ottoman-period buildings in the area were destroyed.
