Geyve is a district of Sakarya Province, lying east of the Marmara Region and south of Sakarya Province. Geyve has been a district since 1830; it was part of Kocaeli Province until 1954, and has belonged to Sakarya Province since then.

Geography

The district’s most important watercourses are the Sakarya River and the Karaçay stream; the Sakarya River passes just beside the district centre. Of the land along the Sakarya River, 20% is plain and the remaining 80% is mountainous and forested.

Geyve Ayvası

Geyve Ayvası is a local product holding a Geographical Indication registration certificate from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. The Geyve Plain lies east of the Sakarya River, runs north–south for about 20 kilometres, and consists entirely of fertile land irrigated from the Sakarya River. Unlike other quince varieties, Geyve Ayvası’s juicy texture makes it easy to eat, which has increased consumer demand.

History and Culture

The district has historic monuments such as Alifuatpaşa Bridge and Elvanbey İmareti, and contains many old settlements and historic buildings. In Aşağı Bağlarbaşı village there is a castle dating from the Late Byzantine period.

History

Geyve has been a district since 1830; it was attached to Sakarya Province in 1954. In 2021 an Ayva (Quince) Statue was erected in Geyve’s district square.
