Pamukova is a district of Sakarya Province, lying east of the Marmara Region and south of Sakarya Province. Nearly all of the district’s population is made up of Manavlar and Balkan migrants.
The Pamukova Plain stretches 28 km east–west and 6 km north–south, with a total area of 170 km². The plain is bordered by the Taraklı–Karagöl Plateau to the south and the Samanlı Mountains to the north. The district covers 289 km², and the centre’s average elevation above sea level is 97 metres.
Around Pamukova there are prehistoric mounds, which indicate that the area has been settled since the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. In the 4th century BC it was under Bithynian rule and was known by the name Tataion (Totaion). It was annexed to Ottoman lands in 1312 in the time of Osman Gazi. On 20 July 2004 the Pamukova train crash took place in the area.
Prehistoric mounds from before historic times are found around Pamukova. Pamukova was a bucak (small town) attached to Geyve until it became a district in 1987.
