Atakum is the central district of Samsun. It begins on the Samsun–Sinop highway, 5 km from the city centre. The district covers 351 km². Atakum’s former name was Matasyon.

History

Atakum became a district under a bill providing for 43 new districts. Once a summer resort and holiday place for Samsun, Atakum has become an area that can be lived in during winter too, and it has become a central district. Because it spreads over flatter land, its urban development is more planned. Its population was 63,712 according to 2004 figures and 123,904 according to the 2010 census.

Features

Atakum differs from other districts in its very well-developed summer tourism and its beaches, which meet Mediterranean standards. It has a shallow, wide sandy shore.

History and Culture

With the new law, Atakent, Kurupelit, İncesu, Altınkum, Çatalçam and Taflan were attached to Atakum municipality.
