Köprüköy is a district of Erzurum province, located on the banks of the Aras River. The district covers 777 km², and its elevation above sea level is 1,615 metres. The district centre is 58 km from Erzurum and 18 km from Pasinler.

History and Origin of the Name

The name Köprüköy was given in the Ottoman period, after the bridge built in the 13th century. Köprüköy lies in the Upper Basiani part of the historic Basiani region. In the Middle Ages it lay within Georgian borders, and in the early 13th century the Battle of Basiani took place between the Georgians and the Turks. The Ottomans took the region from the Georgians in 1545.

Geography

The district lies between Pasinler and Horasan on the Erzurum–Kars road. The historic Çobandede Bridge, which gave Köprüköy its name, stands on the Aras River beside this road. About 3 km north of the district is Deli Çermik, known as a mud spa.

History and Culture

The Ottomans took the region from the Georgians in 1545. Köprüköy became a town (belde) with municipal status in 1972. The Çobandede sub-district was converted into Köprüköy district in 1990.
