Olur is a district of Erzurum province, located in the east of the Black Sea Region. The district covers 893 km² and sits at an altitude of 1,331 metres above sea level. Together with Şenkaya, Oltu, Tortum and Yusufeli, Olur was part of the region known in Georgian history as Tao (Tayk in Armenian).
Known as Olori in Georgian, Olur lay within the borders of the Kingdom of Georgia in the early Middle Ages. In 1071, after defeating Byzantium at the Battle of Malazgirt (Manzikert), the Great Seljuks went on the offensive. In 1550 it was taken from the Georgians by the Ottoman Empire. According to an Ottoman register of 1574, Olur village had 64 households, 62 of which were Christian. After the October Revolution of 1917 and the collapse of the Russian army, Olur came under the control of Armenian militias for a time. In 1958, while still a sub-district of Oltu, it became an independent district of Erzurum province.
The district has parallel mountain ranges to the north and south, cut by deep valleys. Its main peaks are Akdağ (2,342 m), Zamp Dağı (2,745 m), Sarıbaba Tepesi (2,605 m) and Horasan Tepesi (2,842 m). Çakoş Plateau lies 31 km from Olur and covers an area of 16 sq km.
The earliest known name of the district was Tavusker; the origin of this name is traced to the Saka-Scythian tribes. Olur was a sub-district of Oltu until 1958; it became a district in 1958.
