Hanönü is a district of Kastamonu province in the Black Sea Region. Located in the Gökırmak valley, a tributary of the Kızılırmak, the district is bordered by Taşköprü district to the west and by Boyabat district of Sinop province to the east.
Until recent years, the district was a subdistrict (bucak) attached to Taşköprü. It has hosted civilisations including the Gasgars, Etis, Dorians, Paphlagonians, Cimmerians, Lydians, Persians, Byzantines, Çobanoğulları and Candaroğulları. Throughout history the district was an important stopping place and had lively periods socially.
The old Silk Road passed through the neighbouring district of Durağan, and caravans crossing it stayed at the han in the district. The historic han is built of rubble stone. It has lost its original entrance; passing through its round-arched doorway, one finds four piers. The han was recorded as an old caravanserai by Chankykoff, who visited in 1848. After Hanönü became a district, rescue efforts led the Ministry of Culture to restore it, and it is to open as a library and museum.
The district covers 417 km², and the town centre has an average elevation of 462 metres above sea level.
The district takes its name from the historic han in the town centre. The municipality was established as Hanönü on 30 December 1988. The historic han was built in 1437 by Tatlu Hatun. The birthplace of Şeyh Şabanı Veli is Çakırçay village, in today’s Hanönü district.
