Burhaniye is a district of Balıkesir province on the Aegean Sea coast. The district is mainly a centre of olive growing for olive oil production and of domestic tourism. The district covers 420 km² and has an average elevation of 23 metres above sea level.
Located in the Aegean Region, the district lies in the Gulf of Edremit area, between Mount Kaz to the north and Madra Mountain to the south. The area has a mild Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.
The most important ancient city in the district is Adramytteion, which is understood to have been founded by the Mysians. The ancient geographer Strabo described Adramytteion as a harbour and naval base colonised by the Athenians. The city joined the Karesi principality in 1300. The district has a distinct and special place in the War of Independence, and the people of Burhaniye have the honour of having fired the first shot.
Ören Beach was awarded the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in 2000.
The district was occupied by Greece on 29 June 1920 and liberated on 8 September 1922. The district consists of 38 neighbourhoods. Its ethnographic makeup includes Manavlar, Yörükler, Mübadil and Muhacir communities. Because it was late in discovering tourism, the district has largely preserved its local culture.
