Of is a district in the east of Trabzon province with a very long history. The land of the district is formed by the lower basins of the Solaklı and Baltacı streams, which flow from Of into the Black Sea. The boundaries of the district shrank in 1948 when Çaykara, and in 1990 when Hayrat, became districts in their own right.
Of and its surroundings came under Ottoman rule in 1461, when Trabzon was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. After the Ottoman takeover, the settlement became a kaza centre within the Trabzon sanjak, covering a wide area that today includes the districts of Of, Çaykara, Hayrat and Dernekpazarı. In the area lie the historic Eskipazar Castle, thought to date from Late Antiquity, which is identified with the Late Roman fortress of Caene Parembole or Kali Parembole.
In 1554, the Of kaza, which consisted of 35 villages, had 3,352 households, of which 295 were Muslim and 3,057 Christian. According to the title deed survey of 1583, the Of kaza consisted of 43 villages with a total of 3,977 households.
Of was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1461 and passed into Ottoman hands. In the Ottoman period, Of was a kaza centre within the Trabzon sanjak and covered a large region.
Of was occupied by Russian forces on 15 March 1916. It was liberated by a Turkish unit on 28 February 1918. Of is known to have been an important trading centre during the Byzantine Empire of Trebizond. The origin of the name Of is not known for certain.
