Kahramankazan, formerly Kazan, is a district of Ankara Province. It was one of the villages on the Mürted Plain before becoming a district in 1987 and has grown considerably. The Turkish Aerospace Industries facilities, where F-16 aircraft are produced, are located in the district.

Origin of the Name

It is said that during the Battle of Ankara in 1402, the Ottoman state used Kazan Village as a field kitchen, and the village took the name ‘Kazan’ from the cauldrons left behind by the army at the end of the battle. In 2016, on the night of the 15 July military coup attempt, the people of Kazan resisted the coup plotters and 9 people lost their lives trying to prevent it, and the district was renamed ‘Kahramankazan’ in their honour.

History

Artefacts uncovered in archaeological excavations show that the Mürted Plain was settled by many different civilisations over the course of history. During the 1942 excavation at Bitik village, 9 settlement layers were uncovered, the lowest of which belongs to the Chalcolithic (Copper Age). In 1354 the district was added to Ottoman territory by Süleyman Pasha, son of Orhan Gazi, the second Ottoman sultan. Satı Kadın, from Kazan Village, became one of Türkiye’s first female village headmen and then entered parliament as one of the country’s first female MPs.

Economy

The district is home to the TAI-TUSAŞ facility, where F-16 fighter jets and attack helicopters are produced. The district’s economy is based on agriculture, livestock farming and industry.

History and Culture

Kazan Village became a subdistrict centre in 1961. Kazan subdistrict became a district in 1987. The name of Kazan district was changed to Kahramankazan in 2016.
