The district’s name derives from Koçhisar Castle of the Seljuk period. Atatürk gave it the title ‘Şerefli’ in memory of the martyrs of the Battle of Çanakkale.
In March 2013, a huge terracotta jar was found in a field in the village by the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilisations; it is now displayed in the Şereflikoçhisar Museum.
