Elmadağ is a very ancient settlement area.
Tarihçe
Prehistoric artefacts obtained from archaeological research show that Elmadağ and its surroundings were the scene of very ancient civilisations. The Phrygians and Lydians maintained their presence in the area until 547 BC, and the Persians until 84 BC, after which it came under the control of the Roman Empire. Turks who began settling in Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 became active in the area after 1073. It is believed that tandır bread-making, which still continues in the district centre, has survived from the Seljuk period to the present day.
Coğrafya
The Elmadağ mountain, with an altitude of 1,862 m, lies to the south-west, and İdris Mountain, at 1,995 m, lies to the north. The district is under the influence of a continental climate with cold, harsh winters.
Tarihçe ve Kültür
The first documents relating to the settlement of Elmadağ are found in the registers of the Ankara Sharia Court, dating from around 400 years ago. It is believed that tandır bread-making in the district centre has continued from the Seljuk period to the present. Carpet-weaving, hand weaving, kilim, saddlebags and bags are referred to as traditional productions whose roots go back to the Seljuks.
